The mission of the Avila Beach Junior Lifeguard scholarship program is to provide opportunities for families who would otherwise not be able to afford to participate in the ABJG program. This scholarship program intends to provide youth with access to enhance their water safety skills, self-confidence, and more.

 

It is important that 2025 ABJG scholarship applicants read ALL of the requirements below and complete our scholarship application, including proof of residency and provide the income documentation requested (Typically recent pay stubs, W-2’s).

NOTICE: Applicants must email applications (DO NOT use the online registration process for the scholarship application). 


2025 Income Eligibility Requirements:

Youth applicants may qualify for free tuition if ANY of the following criteria are verified:

  1. Parent/guardian of the youth applicant currently receives benefits from CalFresh, CalWorks, Medi-Cal, or the FCC Lifeline Program. 

  2. Parent/guardian currently receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits from the Social Security Administration. 

  3. Parent/guardian of youth currently receives HUD Housing Choice Voucher Program benefits or other income assistance benefits from a California Public Housing Authority.

  4. If youth applicant is a foster child who is the legal responsibility of the welfare agency or court.

  5. Parent/guardian receiving veteran benefits offered by the Department of Veteran affairs that are similar/equivalent to those programs described above will be reviewed and evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

  6. Parent/guardian current enrollment in other income-based county, California State, or federal assistance programs will be reviewed and evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

 

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

Youth applicant must:

  1. Be age-eligible (6 through 17 years old) for the 2025 ABJG Program.

  2. Must meet or beat the ABJG Minimum Swim Safety Standard for your child's age group. The Minimum Swim Safety Standards can be found at this link: As/Bs/Cs.
    *ALL applicants applying for an ABJG Scholarship must know how to swim. Due to time constraints, it is strongly advised that children meet or beat the Minimum Swim Safety Standard prior to applying for the Scholarship.Your child's ability to meet the Minimum Swim Safety Standard will be verified following the submission of your application. 

  3. Be a legal dependent of the guardian listed on this APPLICATION. Verification documents may be required.

  4. Be a year-round resident of the State of California.Verification documents may be required (recent utility bill with parent/guardian name, verification of school enrollment, etc.).

  5. Comply with ALL Avila Beach Junior Lifeguard Program rules.

 

About the Scholarship Selection Process:

It is important to note that a qualifying application does not guarantee a scholarship award. Scholarships are based on availability of funds and apply for one session of the 2025 ABJG Program. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the amount of available funds, scholarships may be awarded via a randomized lottery system.
